Protest songs don’t have to be all angry and shouty; in fact, you probably put a lot of people off with a sonic wailing and gnashing of teeth. After all, as the saying goes, “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” And so if the “flies” in that analogy equate to the song’s potential listeners and “vinegar” the traditional punky sloganeering protest songs, then “honey” is the perfect description of “The Hunter,” the second single from Once Great Estate’s forthcoming EP.
Based on a true story of a hunter who went out in search of a bear and never returned, it’s a subtle and supple anti-hunting tune, making its point through gorgeous indie sonics and dreamscape sounds, almost as if to highlight the beauty of the natural world and the wild creatures we share it with, building a shimmering soundscape that echoes the beauty of the world around us.
The band has long advocated an end to bear hunting, both in their home state of Florida and further afield, and songs like this help promote that idea.
We do live in a time when many think it is okay to take what they want from the world around us – ores and animals, timber and resources – with no consideration for the effect that it might have on the ecological equilibrium, and as such “The Hunter” is a small but vital brick in the wall of resistance to such unchecked greed and unnecessary distruction.
