There is something gorgeous at the heart of the new one from Outpost Drive, the same vibe that shimmered so elegantly and, indeed, eloquently, through the music of the likes of Fleetwood Mac, a sound that seems to unite bucolic folk loveliness with accessible, dream-pop-infused otherworldliness. There is also a cosmic vibe that transcends Old World roots or New World traditions, a sound that is bigger than geography and even genre.
And gorgeous is the right word indeed, and “House of Cards” revels in hazy harmonies that ooze with love and longing, gentle acoustic guitar rhythms that build a platform upon which they hang all manner of delicious sonics. It revels in serene simplicity and elevated, emotive choruses. Even when they allow themselves the luxury of a guitar solo, it is succinct and to the point, purposefully acting as a catalyst for the song to break loose and head for the finish line.
The first song to find itself under the pen after a relaxing weekend, and what a way to start the working week. Perfection.
