Somewhere between the straightforward melodic engagement of indie and the reverb-soaked climes of dream-pop, a place where haze and harmony dance delicately together, is the spot where you find “Savage,” the latest single from Pacificaze. And it is a great place from which to foist yourself upon the public conscience. As this single proves.
Sure, there is an infectiousness and immediacy to the song, but to this accessibility is wrapped in warm tones and comforting textures. If the indie sound is often built around a cool, raw sound, here Pacifigaze leans more toward a wonderful blend of surf sounds and shimmering shoegaze. If I were going to get all poetic, I would even suggest that it is a sound that is the sonic equivalent of the summer sun dancing on the water.
Even though the opening lyrical sentiments reflect on a relationship that didn’t go the way the protagonist had hoped, it soon pivots to thoughts of a lucky escape. So a song which could easily be a maudlin muse on heartache actually becomes a celebration of freedom and not being caught up in the complexities and minefields of being with the wrong person.
And even though my references of classic indie and surfer rock, dream-pop, and shoegaze might suggest that this is a song looking to the sonic past for inspiration, I should make it clear that although those influences are there if you look hard enough, there is nothing about this single that isn’t of the moment, contemporary and running perfectly in step with the sounds of today.
