I remember loving the opening salvo, “Disconnected,” when it came my way as a single, perhaps a year ago now. It was a fist-in-the-air blend of terrace punk anthemics and sleazy rock and roll backstreet operatics, a short, sharp, and shocking blast of garage vibes and outsider swagger. What better way could Packetloss choose to kick off this full-length assault on the senses?
From here, this Limerick based three-piece runs roughshod over punk and garage-rock templates to create their own blend of abrasive, punk-infused, rock-fuelled, infectious, and accessible sound.
“Escape” is built on the sort of punk punch that Green Day would wrestle you bodily to the ground to get their hands on, “Restless” leans into some denser, grungy realms, and “Modern Day Meltdown” runs on a slow-paced, doom-laden, twin guitar-infused groove.
Then there are tracks such as “Shards,” which prove that Packetloss is equally at home with the more deft and delicate deliveries as they are with the more incendiary ones.
And while Reconnected is not what you might call a concept album, it is certainly an album of concepts, with one of the main thrusts being a look at our relationship with the modern world, particularly the technological one, and how, despite the advantages it brings, a reminder of the isolation and addiction, the disenfranchisement and frustrations that follow in its wake.
If “Disconnected” was the perfect calling card for the band, then “Reconnected” is everything such a deft introduction promised.
