There are clear influences of the 90s shoegaze/dream-pop heyday found threaded through “EyeSwoon,” but this is no mere nostalgiafest. Balancing that nostalgic element are more than enough modern musical moves to make the song part of a forward-moving quest for the sound of the future. The result is a track sitting somewhere between an ambient post-punk past and an adventurous post-rock present.
With their second album, 1to0, out in about a month, “EyeSwoon” is the latest in a series of singles that act as a calling card, a way to tease the audience and test the water. Anyone with a more discerning musical taste will see this for what it is: a brilliant advert for what promises to be an exciting and creative album.
1to0 offers a collection of songs that muse on love and longing and loss, the relatable stuff of life, and the emotional journeys that we all embark on, purposefully or otherwise. But musically, it also speaks of a more specific place, namely the band’s base between California’s High Desert and Inland Empire, absorbing something of the cinematic nature of the landscape, the sense of isolation and beauty of the desert.
As a song, “EyeSwoon” is a gorgeous piece of music. As a single, it does precisely what every single should do…it makes you want to know more.
