Para Lia makes fascinating music, and I mean that in the most literal of senses. I find it fascinating, for example, how so many sonic touchstones and musical references are woven through their music, yet the result is totally unique. References that walk a fine line between the bruised and brooding goth sound and something artier, more accessible and altogether in an alt-rock vein—music standing between pop and a dark place.
“Sunchild” is the perfect example of what I’m talking about, a song driving on a Simon Gallup worthy bass bombardments, a song covered in scuzzy and abrasive Dinosaur Jr. guitars, jaunty drum shuffles and slightly world-weary, Jesus and Mary Chain-esque vocals which in turn duet with some heavenly harmonies.
Add a dash of psychedelic vibes to soften the edges and some darker energies to add to the intensity, and you have a gorgeous song, one built on so many sonic juxtapositions, not least the matter of a title as sunshine-infused as “Sunchild” and the music itself which takes an altogether more dramatic turn.
Opposites attract, and “Sunchild’ is an oh-so-attractive song.
