Metaphor is a marvelous tool for the songwriter, and so, as Patrick Doval tells tales of looking for love in the stars, of finding the one in the endless ether, he is, of course, talking about the seemingly as difficult search for the right one, right here on Earth. But of course, his tale of the love-starved space traveler following his heart makes for fun imagery, and we all know what he means. A fantastic tale but a very real quest.
And as he looks to the heavens for lyrical inspiration, he finds sonic inspiration, at least in part, in 80s power-pop and new wave rock and roll…or perhaps the other way around. Either way, this modern slice of very accessible rock is shot through with relatable and recognizable grooves and moves – that collision point of pop and rock that typified bands like The Cars, the more fractious energies of, say, Elvis Costello, all topped off with some classic guitar riffs and squalling lead breaks. Marvelous.
Energy and excitement, muscle and melody, contagion and cool, all abound. And not just any cool, but the sort of cool that comes from the low-slung guitar, foot-on-the-monitor, fist-in-the-air attitude and artistry of music that still carries the old-school spirit of rock and roll torch into the modern age.
