“No FEAR” might be taken from Paul Archer’s debut album, but that doesn’t mean that he is new to the sonic fray. Anything but. With bands such as Disreali Gears, The Ghears, and Burning Codes on his CV and able to call the likes of Duke Special collaborators, this is the sound of a seasoned pro at work.
Even without the name-dropping, that much becomes obvious as soon as the needle hits the record. Sitting somewhere between rock and indie, this is a song with groove and energy, accessibility and sonic smarts. And when you think you have the song’s measure, when you have resigned yourself to the fact that this is just another slice of indie-rock, we find ourselves in a flute-fanned, folk-rock interlude, courtesy of Horslips stalwart Jim Lockhart. (See what I mean, friends in all the right places.)
And the message is simple, and wonderfully apparent thanks to the effortlessly sing-along-able chorus. Focus on love, don’t fear the unknown, head towards the light, and embrace the glorious potential of everything the future has to offer: a timely and timeless message, a powerful and poignant sentiment, and a great song.
