Paul Cafcae - Eileen (Cafcae Records)

19 January 2025

I love the way that Paul Cafcae can run all over the musical landscape, but irrespective of what genres he is hopping through, what sounds and styles he is mixing and melding, he still always sounds like Paul Cafcae. That speaks to the idea that with the best songwriters, it is as much their sonic personality as the sound they make, which is on show when we encounter them.

And lyrically, too, there is always an honesty and accessible poeticism that you find in his lyrics, whether he is making political points or, as he is here, singing about affairs of the heart. And whilst we have encountered him in everything from roaring proto-punk states to medieval-infused fantasy folk, hear it is a simple love song he gives us.

A slow, stirred, shuffle beat and half-hidden guitars are all he needs to underline his point, and the result is a slice of country crooned blues, unadorned, straightforward, and heartfelt. Guitars fire off simple but effective solos, and the occasional crash of cymbals is all needed to ring the changes, but space is the actual instrument that dominates here.

And that space is why the lyrics, set against such a stark background, are so much the focal point, as they should be with a song about love and longing, emotion and vulnerability.

Of course, you may have heard something similar to a song like this, but what you get when Paul writes such song is Paul Cafcae front and center. And that is always a good thing.
