I love the duality of music. I love it’s ability to be two things at once. In the case of “Waiting for the Sun,” the first single from Phwoar’s forthcoming EP, Flowers Through the Concrete that duality is that is able to be a lovely and lilting slice of infectious indie rock and also a poignant statement about the modern world.
On the surface, we have an enjoyable, accessible, and exciting weave of rhythmic guitars and sonic washes that build and explode and ebb and flow as the vocals shift dynamically around above this platform. The song wanders in and out of anthemic indie realms and understated rock, the vocals duties are shared to impressive effect, and the whole thing is a fresh take on a familiar sound.
Dig a little deeper, and you find some brilliant social commentary at work. Today, the day of the single’s release, is known in the UK as Blue Monday, thought to be the most depressing day of the year, and con-incidentally, this year, the inauguration of Donald Trump’s controversial return to office….read into what you will.
And if Blue Monday seems to be just another capitalist and corporate hype pulling the heartstrings of a gullible population in the name of mental health (apparently), “Waiting for the Sun” counters that shallow and money-motivated move by being a song of hope, a plea to be resilient in these ever-darkening times, to be strong-willed and to weather the storm, if you can. It reminds us that life is full of highs and lows, joy and fears, but that the sun always returns after every storm.
Stay strong!
