Pillowprince - pretty, baby (Dune Altar)

25 April 2025

You could make a good argument that Pillowprince is one of those bands that has something for everyone, a band unconstricted by existing sounds and styles, that has no truck with music tradition, who, if they are playing by any set of rules, are the ones that they have written themselves.

Take “R the Straits OK,” which kicks off this short, sharp, and shockingly original EP, a song that wanders between twee-pop sugar and grunge intensity, like an avalanche hitting an eighties indie band’s tour bus. Brilliant! And if the sentiment of “why do you think I want to be like the rest of you?” is a theme as old as rock and roll itself, it doesn’t hurt to repeat it, and they do put a neat, modern spin on the subject.

From here, “Babybird” is dark, ambient, atmospheric, and shot through with lush, minimal guitar work, “Mercurial” is a laid-back indie number, initially, that transforms into a squalling shoegazing storm, just because it can..and back again, and “Care About” mixes apocalyptic blues with spacious dream-pop, as much soundscape as song, and very Lynchian, gawd bless him!

I love bands that are unsecondguessable! Bands that suggest one direction of travel and then subvert expectations. I love bands that mix up genres and invent a few new ones along the way (ambient grunge?) I love bands that are not trying to be different but are just naturally not part of the pack. And for all those reasons and more, I love Pillowprince!
