Tacoma-based duo Plaid Lion delivers an irresistible dose of indie pop with their new single, “Follow Me.” A brilliant fusion of disco and jazz, the track manages to effortlessly combine a four-on-the-floor beat with a more laidback, downtempo mood. These two elements would seem to clash, especially with the use of upright bass on a disco beat, but against all odds the duo have crafted a truly sophisticated ear worm.
SaraEllen‘s smart but understated vocals lock into a similarly textured and restrained groove, and together they weave into a hypnotic spell that burrows itself deep into the subconscious. Yet it is and it isn’t all that deep, as there’s a clear sense of fun and playfulness here with the duo aiming to create a miniature musical oasis for the listener to enjoy.
“Follow Me” is danceable yet atmospheric, the perfect soundtrack for the end of the summer as it merges both carefree and subtly melancholic attitudes. It’s difficult to point toward any specific reference points, as they have created something completely their own, but one can imagine fans of everything from Portishead to Tennis finding something captivating here.
