Plum is a new psychedelic band out of Denver, Colorado set to release their debut EP, Light Years, Dark Years later in the month. They might be one of the only truly authentic revival bands around, solely because very few modern influences, if any at all, find their way onto these recordings. Plum seamlessly bridges the gap between Cream and The Stooges, who are not as far apart from each other as one would immediately think. They combine the jamming proclivities of the former while infusing it with the proto-punk attitude of the latter on songs “Light Years, Dark Years,” and “Drip.”
Elsewhere, they channel suburban Californian garage rock on the closer, “Hypnagaga,” which features some lovely Byrds-ian guitars. The most purely psychedelic moment happens on “Cosmic Vice,” which also incidentally is their prettiest song with a fantastically lazy, meandering quality. “Love Is In The Air” is more of their same brand of psychedelica. They never truly embrace the darker side of the genre, yet there is a hint of something slightly sinister lurking in the background. Light Years, Dark Years is a wonderful first release, and it’s out December 7th.
