PODViG! describes “Cloud Maze” as the result of a “hobby that got out of control.” Well, we’ve all been there. You meet as a group of like-minded music-makers and throw some ideas around. Those ideas become a jam. The jam becomes a rough track. The rough track becomes a demo. The demo gets taken into a studio, and after much production, editing, mixing, arranging, and mastering…voila! You have yourself a debut release.
But it’s better such a song sees the light of day than be lost to time, as it is a bit good. This five-and-a-half-minute instrumental comes slightly from the realm of Floydian soundscaping. It’s a subtle, supple, and sublime blend of shimmering guitars, bass lines that cleverly link those melodies to the digital beats, and the whole thing is held together with ebbs and flows of piano lines and synth washes.
It is cinematic and scintillating, feeling as much a soundtrack as it does a progressive rock piece, orchestrated and arranged in a way more akin to a classical score than the way your average rock or pop band would approach things.
But more than that, it is adventurous, wandering through various dynamic realms, rising and falling, ebbing and flowing, layering together tones and textures to significant effect and creating an always gentle evolving piece of music.
As debut tracks go, this is a brilliant calling card, a piece that certainly puts PODViG! on the musical map. Where they might go next is anyone’s guess, but I will certainly be watching with keen interest.
