Although best known for his work with Citizen Jim, Politis Dimitris 2.0 not only sees the titular frontman offering his first solo single, but “Born to This” is probably the first time that southern rock grooves and metaphysical thought have been merged so deftly, so satisfyingly.
Built on a seductive, bass-heavy groove that would give Alannah Myles “Black Velvet” a run for its money, the song is peppered with fantastic guitar work, from single sonic shards that are shot through the body of the music to ornate, muscular, and technically dexterous salvos that dominate the space for there brief existance as they flash through the song.
However, as slick and beguiling as these sounds are, it is the lyrics that become the focal point, a meditation on cultural duality and the broader human condition, woven through with primitive urges and thoughts on the existential crisis of modern life.
It’s a heady clash of thought and groove, echoes of the ancient philosophical debates of his homeland woven through the low-slung, rootsy rock sounds of the place where he made the music, Nashville. Soulful and sophisticated, the sound of mellifluous music and academia finding common cause, this is rock ‘n’ soul with a college education, a song majoring in entertainment yet getting excellent grades in ethics too.
Taken from the EP, Mortal Trip, this is not only the thinking person’s rock and roll, but it is a single that firmly puts Politis Dimitris 2.0 on the musical map as an artist in his own right.
