Prymek & Sage – Shelter (AKP Recordings)

9 April 2026

The expansive quietude of the Mountain West serves as more than just a backdrop for ‘Shelter’; it functions as a third collaborator alongside Chaz Prymek and Matthew Sage. After six years of diverging paths through academia, parenthood, and the collective success of their work in Fuubutsushi, this reunion like a long-overdue conversation held in the amber light of a Colorado evening. Recorded in a rustic pole barn, the album captures a specific alchemy that only exists between old friends who no longer feel the need to fill every silence with noise.

The opening of “Wonder Comes Aroaring” sets a precedent for the entire collection, emphasizing a patient economy of sound. Sage handles the piano with a deliberate, melodic touch, while Prymek provides a foundation of electric guitar that feels both grounded and ethereal. Their chemistry is instinctive, born from a decade of shared history, allowing the music to drift without ever losing its internal compass. As they move into “Michigan Turquoise,” a composition penned by Sage, the arrangement expands to include the woody timbre of the clarinet and the steady pulse of a banjo, evoking the agrarian landscapes they both call home.

In “Shelter From,” the duo explores the concept of sanctuary through sound. Prymek’s lap steel and harmonium create a shimmering horizon line, while Sage’s use of harmonica and synthesizers adds layers of soft-edged color. The production is clean yet possesses a weathered quality, reminiscent of wood grain or sun-bleached linen. This tonal balance is particularly effective during “Hill Blocks View,” a sprawling centerpiece where the improvisational core of the project is most evident. Here, the piano and electric bass guitar engage in a slow-motion dance, mirroring the way light shifts across a valley floor.

The inclusion of subtle overdubs (alto saxophone, recorder, and delicate percussion), never obscures the central dialogue. Instead, these elements act as decorative flourishes on a sturdy architectural frame. By the time the final notes of “Red Healer” fade, there is a palpable sense of resolution. Chaz Prymek and Matthew Sage have crafted an album that honors their past while firmly planting itself in their present reality. ‘Shelter’ is a rare document of artistic maturity, a humble yet majestic celebration of friendship and the enduring pull of the high plains. It stands as a landmark in their respective catalogs that helps define pastoral ambient music, offering a serene space for contemplation in an increasingly frantic world.
