There is something about some bands’ ability to weld slabs of raw, abrasive, and edgy alt-rock with pop melodies and sheer infectiousness that is so satisfying. It is a marriage of opposites, a collision of two sonic worlds, beauty, and the beast making a surprisingly gorgeous couple, but it is a powerful and potent blend.
The pop half of this sonic coming together keeps things accessible and full of instant groove, the rock component lifts the whole thing above the realms of mainstreams fad and fashion, and the result is something that will find a home with both discerning pop-pickers and outsiders alternative rock fans alike. Pop music for those bored with its current style over substance state. Rock music for those who crave some directness and honesty.
“Sound of Kissing” evokes thoughts of seminal bands such as Sonic Youth, Husker Du, and Pixies, but it is a sound that we associate more with past glories than a current trend or future potential. But Quiz Show, featuring members of Shudder To Think, Guided By Voices, and The Dambuilders is here to put that straight. Is this the sound of a bright new musical future? We can but hope.
With a string of commercially and critically well-received singles already behind them and an eponymous debut album in the works, it feels like the time is right for a revival of those heady college/alt-rock sounds. And who better than Quiz Show to lead the charge?
