Rafael Chamone – Sonoluminesence (Adhyâropa Records)

16 March 2026

The intersection of light and sound is rarely as tangible as it is on ‘Sonoluminescência,’ the debut masterwork from Brazilian guitarist Rafael Chamone. The title refers to the phenomenon of sound waves creating light in a liquid, a metaphor that perfectly encapsulates the fluid, radiant energy of this collection. Recorded in New York but breathing with the rhythmic lungs of Minas Gerais, the album serves as a bridge between the historical echoes of Ouro Preto and the cutting-edge jazz vernacular of Manhattan. Chamone has curated a transgenerational ensemble that acts as a living dialogue, featuring the seasoned wisdom of Rogério Boccato, Colin Stranahan, and Myles Sloniker alongside the vital, rising voices of Anthony Bolden and Arnie Sainz.

The opening, “Sonoluminescência,” functions as a thesis statement for the entire project. It opens with granular delay effects that stretch and refract time, creating an ethereal glow around the foundational pillars of the guitar and piano. As the piece develops, the intricate interplay between drummer Stranahan and percussionist Boccato becomes a marvel of cross-cultural communication. Together, they juxtapose the triplet feel of Afro-Samba with a sophisticated American swing, providing a robust architecture for blistering solos from Bolden’s tenor saxophone and Chamone’s own lyrical guitar work.

Chamone’s compositional voice is one of obsessive motivic development, a technique learned from the Bahian master Letieres Leite. This is brilliantly displayed on “Sinos,” a piece inspired by the church bells of his youth. Here, the melodic fragments are treated like rhythmic mantras, revolving and evolving until they transcend their origin. The music feels both ancient and modern, a sentiment that carries into “Sky Seresta.” On this track, the influence of Hamilton de Holanda is palpable, as Chamone weaves the spirit of choro into a contemporary jazz tapestry, investigating the meeting points where Brazilian tradition greets global improvisation as an equal.

The mid-album transition through “Assyrtiko” highlights the collective strength of the New York-based quintet. Sloniker offers a ruminative, deep-toned bass introduction that sets a contemplative stage before the momentum shifts into a propulsive drive. Sainz provides a searching, intellectual piano performance that anchors the music in the vanguard of modern jazz, while Bolden’s tenor work pushes the boundaries of the ensemble’s atmospheric reach. The album also pays deep homage to the legendary Milton Nascimento, particularly on “Tua Canção” and the single “Ladeira.” On the latter, Boccato’s percussion takes center stage, exploring the rare Afro-folkloric grooves of Congado in an instrumental setting, shifting seamlessly between complex meters in a nod to Nascimento’s harmonic adventurousness.

The record ends with “O Cio da Terra,” a closing statement that reaffirms the album’s grounding in the earth and its ascent toward the heavens. Throughout the record, the production ensures that the imperfection of human hands sound vibrantly alive. Chamone has managed to avoid the common pitfalls of fusion by refusing to compromise the integrity of either his Brazilian roots or his adopted jazz language. Instead, he allows them to illuminate one another. ‘Sonoluminescência’ is a triumphant debut that proves when diverse musical voices converge with enough curiosity and craft, they do not just create sound, they create a brilliant, lasting light.
