Anything that draws a line between the latin-prog, psychedelic wig-outs of early Santana and the avant-gardening music of Stereolab via the lush soundscapes of Tame Impala will always be a band that you will want to take a closer look at. And so, “Amor Fati,” the new single from Rare Seed might be just another sonic blip of the busy musical radar of modern life, but it will be the most interesting, perhaps most important, ping you will have had in a long time. Investigate it you must, at all costs.
Taken from their current EP, Heavy Blows, the song is woven from some very cool sonic threads—psychedelic intrigue, indie rock groove, and ornate acid jazz flourishes—to name but three. However, an overall Latin vibe rises from the beats and rhythms that form the song’s structural platform, not so much the genre’s sound in the traditional sense, but more as if the band are pushing such grooves through a more modern exploratory and progressive filter.
However they do it, the results are remarkable. And timeless. Yes, timeless, not because the music seems to fit in, stay relevant, and move with the times, transcending the weight of fad and fashion as it goes, but because I can’t imagine a time when such music would have felt at home. But the best, most exciting, and most memorable music is undoubtedly that which dances to the beat of its own drum… literally and metaphorically. And Rare Seed, as proven here, is certainly a band that does that.
