There was a time when rock music and electronic sonic creations were opposing camps and “never the twain shall meet,” as the saying goes. The former was the bastion of serious guitar wielders, the latter the realm of pop wannabes, sworn enemies, or at least sonic rivals.
Thankfully, those tribal days are far behind us, and rock music is just as likely to be made from digital deftness as pop is from analog ingenuity. And somewhere between those two worlds is where we find “Access To Pollution,” the latest slice of electronic rock from Ready, Steady, Die!
Taking inspiration from a sign with those three words seen while Sam K was stuck in traffic on the M25, a road previously immortalized by Chris Rea as the “Road to Hell,” this dark and sensual blend of shimmering electronica and raw squalling, sonics, glitchy grooves, and brooding rhythms, examines the toxic dynamics of relationships, both personal and societal.
It is a track that couldn’t have existed in our less musically enlightened past but which now sits in the place where new sonic worlds are being created by music makers who are not bounded by traditions or rules, expectations, or existing comfort zones.
