Stronger Broken is an album that proved impossible not to fall for, not only because of the quality and accessibility of the songwriting but also because of less tangible factors such as relatability and depth, poeticism, and poise. At the heart of this album of sonic gems is “Stuck in Yesterday,” which now receives its day in the sun as a single and video.
The video is simple, a performance video, but it feels more like we are intruding, at times, on someone’s personal space, listening to their private thoughts rather than having been invited in. And it is a simplicity that matches the song’s structure, essentially a delicate singer-songwriter delivering gently embellished with only the necessary sonics – a fleeting additional guitar line here, the sweep of a piano there, a minimal and understated beat – and little else.
And it is the blend of openness and honesty found in the lyrics, a deep sharing of emotions and experiences, that makes the song such a great experience. It feels less like a song and more like a late-night conversation with an old friend, a shoulder being cried on, or at least a burden shared.
Yes, Stronger Broken is a great album, and its greatness lies in the strength of its songs, any one of which could be sent out into the world to stand on its own two feet. And as “Stuck in Yesterday” proves, these are songs that do much more than stand on their own two feet; they soar!
