While we tend to think all the cool things, excitement, and happening happenings take place in the big cities, Rebekah Snyder’s latest single is a reminder of the simpler pleasures of “Small Town” life. Informed by her own rural Pennsylvania upbringing, it is a song advocating a simpler life in such places- those numerous unfamiliar place-names that you see on the maps- which are the slow, steady beating heart of a country.
Blending rock and roll grooves with some sassy country moves, Appalachian-infused folkiness and pop potential, “Small Town” is pacy and poignant, accessible and infectious as it lays out tales of volleyball fundraisers, slow beers at the bar, familiar faces, sports days and all the safety nets and sociality, family and familiarity that goes with it.
And even if you don’t spend your whole life in such places, they remain home and are great places to return to… and I, for one, can relate to such sentiment.
The nightly news might suggest that the world is under siege, buffeted by political winds and the clouds of darkness gathering on the edge of town; “Small Town” reminds us that, in most parts of not just America but the world, life goes on as normal. This is an anthem to the solidity and safety of the places many of us call home.
Raise a glass to normality, people!
