Repeat has always made a big sound, a sound that combines the gnarly sonic weight of grunge, the propulsive pulse of alternative rock, and the abrasiveness of post-punk. With their new single, “Celebrate,” they are still wandering through such underground and peripheral genres, but they seem to have heightened all musical components.
The driving energies have been laid down in a more melodic fashion, the guitars are more visceral and precise, and for all of that, these refinements have, if anything, made the music heavier. Perhaps it just lands with a better-aimed sonic punch. I don’t know, but whatever they have done, it sounds like the Repeat of old…only more. Much more.
Guitars riff and roar, the drums are pummelling and brutal, and the bass is relentless and raw; the sound of Repeat simultaneously spreading its wings and boiling its sound down to its purest sonic essence.
This musical celebration of leaving old habits and hang-ups behind and just living in the moment is the first taste of an EP of the same name, due in September, that promises four additional short, uncompromising, and straight-to-the-point tracks that also showcase and underline this slightly new direction of travel.
I, for one, can’t wait.
