Despite the title of their latest single sounding like a “Cocteau Twins” song, what Reverse Revolution actually delivers with Cherry Blossom Kiss is a more driven, more caustic, more direct sound, one sitting between alternative rock’s drive and pop-punk’s buoyancy. It’s gloriously raw, wonderfully vibrant, and more than anything, authentic.
If lyrically, the song comes from a very innocent place, one that dreams of fleeting kisses, first crushes, and the confusion that comes with the onset of adulthood, especially when it comes to relationships and romances, such honesty is born of the fact that the members of this three-piece Australian band are all aged 12 or 13. This is the reality of their own lives they are talking about here.
But it is also sonically telling. There is a wonderful blend of rawness that comes from a band still learning its trade, but, even more surprisingly, given its young age, you can already hear the sound of something great in the making.
“Cherry Blossom Kiss” would be impressive from players twice their age, so imagine what they might be doing in three, five, ten, or twenty years. Only time will tell, but I’ve put my money on the fact that we will be hearing a lot more from them over the next few years. Come back this time next year and tell me I’m wrong.
