If you need further proof that rock and roll is a global language that cuts through any barriers that might be created by words and understanding, then “Pin Up” is undoubtedly it. Yes, the vocals are in French, but that doesn’t make the song any less potent. In fact, you could even argue that it adds a bit of edge and intrigue for us who don’t speak the language. And what, after all, is rock and roll without some edge and intrigue?
But even if we can’t follow the words, the vibe is clear: old-school blues rock built on big riffs, fun and florid solos, driving backbeats, and rumbling basslines, just as the gods of music intended. And that, is a common sonic tongue if ever there was one.
And if it proves something else, it is this: the old adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” still holds true. Rock and roll ain’t broke, and Reynald N’Trio doesn’t attempt to fix it; they merely put their own spin on things, add some polish and freshen things up for the modern audience. The best of both worlds – fresh and familiar in equal measure.
The video is a bit creepy, though, but I guess that is the point. You were never meant to take the genre that seriously in the first place, it’s just a bit of fun. It looks like old-school blues rock is back on the menu, boys and girls!
