If you want to know the difference between kids’ music and music made with kids in mind, then this second album release from Riffin’ Griffin is the place to go. If the former is childlike tunes aimed at fundamental learning and interactive skill development, the music found on Drawing the Silver Lining is a whole different ball game.
The five songs found here aim to instill in young people a healthy moral world view and well-attuned ethical outlook. Although the thought process here is one of “get them while they are young,” it is obvious that many adults could also benefit from such messages, as evidenced by the world around us.
And again, the difference here is that this isn’t music made from the usual tropes and gimmicks that children’s music suffers from; this is adult music, an accessible, pop-infused rock that is every bit as deftly done and well-built as anything in the adult market – imagine Weezer doing a guest appearance on Sesame Street!
“Kindness” is, as the title suggests, a song that promotes the necessity to be a positive and polite, understanding, and empathetic presence in the world, a message that everyone can benefit from. “I Am Cringe” is for everyone who thinks they are at odds with the world and who finds solace in a like-minded soul with whom they can be gorgeously geeky, amazingly awkward, and naturally nerdy…which, to be honest, to some degree, is most of us, no matter your age.
This short and sharp album concludes with “Silver Linings,” which reminds us to stay positive, especially when our emotions are in turmoil, to “know ourselves better,” and to look for our own silver linings when our heart turns dark. Even our worst thoughts and urges can teach us so much about ourselves.
Drawing the Silver Lining may be aimed at the younger demographic, but its songs are as relevant to adult life as they are to the formative years. As they say, “From the mouths of babes….”
