Imagine if The Beach Boys had not made their name singing of sun and sea and surf and girls and cars, but had instead written songs about their love of horror films. Sound a bit hard to contemplate? Okay, in that case, just give the new one from the marvelously named Rocky Bottom a spin. It is everything that I have just described above.
Cocooned in lush vocal treatments and shimmering textures, with “Scary Movies,” Mr. Bottom does for the scream queens and creature features what those lads did for the surf scene. And, as the song moves through its paces, it slowly adds additional tones and textures, building a new skin that heads away from the 60’s pop sound and into a realm more akin to 70’s heartland rock…from the Boys to The Boss, if you will.
As much as this is a tribute to the horror movie itself, it also cleverly compares their shivery shenanigans to the slings and arrows of everyday life. After all, have we not all, at one point, felt as if we are trapped in the script of a Steven King movie adaptation? It’s the only explanation that makes any real sense.
