Roscoe Tripp - Tiny Antelopes (Fine Family Records)

4 June 2025

To say that Roscoe Tripp is merely an indie band would be like standing on the shore of Lake Titicaca and observing that it might be a bit deep! Yes, these DC music makers might forge their music out of cool indie swathes and rock and roll energy, but not only does their signature sound come from the fact that they do that in ways that most rival bands could hardly begin to grasp, but from the other sounds and styles, genres and scenes that they find inspiration in and thread through this mesh.

Tiny Antelopes opens with a mind-blowing trip (pun intended), one built from the slightly psychedelic, often anthemic, always unsecondguessable sonic threads that make up “Dik-dik, Pt 1,” which, as sonic calling cards go, is a brilliant way to kick things off. “MoUse Rat” blends both shimmering rock sonic weight and soulful licks, an indie groove that is smoothed out by almost ambient sonics, which softens the edges, and lush, widescreen harmonies that are rewarding, rich, and sophisticated.

“The Process of Living” demonstrates that they are just as adept at crafting songs that rely on simpler approaches and straightforward deliveries as they are with their more intricate soundscaping. “Feels the Safe” wanders in and out of garage rock territory, creating some fantastic musical dynamics as it does so.

To say that their music is progressive, adventurous, and more than occasionally experimental is an understatement, but the most surprising thing of all is that they do all of this on what is actually their debut album. As first impressions go, Tiny Antelopes is pretty awesome.
