If you can’t find a sonic reference to your favourite rock and roll style doing its thing and working its way through this new, four-track EP from Royal Blush, then either you aren’t listening properly, or you don’t get rock music at all. Play it again and bend your ear in properly.
Recent single ‘Gimme (One Thing)’ kicks things off in fine style, a modern slice of pop-aware alt-rock that meets the sort of spiky, upbeat groove that emo would do more of if the genre weren’t predicated on moping and whining about everything. Look, kids, this is how great the genre could be – attitude-y, driven and awesome.
‘Ur Cure’ heads into more ballad territory, but still manages to run some solid rhythms and clever dynamics to ensure that the song has a satisfying sonic weight and an attractive musical shape. ‘Roll The Dice’ runs on classic rock rifferry and grunge-esque energy, weaving old-school attitude together with the sheen and sophistication of the modern age; this is incendiary rock music with just enough of the rough edges smoothed off, but not so much that it doesn’t hang on to the genre’s heritage.
‘Like Ur Mine’ is anthemic and then some, creating some brilliant, big and bold deliveries by dropping into such understated lulls that the rise back to the sonic heights takes the longest and therefore the most impactful and impressive route possible.
From Where We’re From is the sound of rock music meeting the challenges of the modern age, matching the raw and roaring sound of the past with the more mainstream sheen and accessible style of today. And that is exactly how you create a blueprint for the future.
