Ryley Walker - All Kinds of You (Tompkins Square)

10 March 2014

Chicago troubadour, Ryley Walker, has made one of the most refined LP’s of the year with All Kinds of You. Released on the Americana revivalist label, Tompkins Square, Walker newly combines the palpable folk of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake with the schooled fretwork of John Renbourn and Davy Graham.

Early highlight, “Blessings,” pairs hopeful strings with plainspoken lyrics and distinguished playing resolving with a venerable chorus and elegant guitar/strings duet. “Clear The Sky,” remains the album’s paramount, adding upright bass, drums and cello to the mix while continuing the LP’s ardent themes. The instrumental, “Tanglewood Spaces,” triumphantly resolves this soon-to-be classic record with poise and levity.

Mark these words, All Kinds of You, is one of the best releases of 2014, not for its likeness to revered Brit folk artists but instead for its honesty and incredible execution.
