Characteristically upbeat but slightly less frantic than his previous punky-Pogues-y “God Bless,” Saint Nick the Lesser returns with a neat slice of alt-country/punk-folk, which sees him considering life as a train ride.
“Train Tracks” is a metaphorical journey inspired by his trying to help a friend through a difficult time in his life, the song advocates the idea that if life is indeed running on the titular train track, rigid and pointing towards an obvious final destination, we must remember that we are all free to jump off and purchase a ticket to a different place any time we like.
The beat rattles along like the lulling groove of a moving train; fingers fly over the guitars, delicately picking or crashing chords, subdued or scintillating as required to shift the mood around. And, again, as is Nick’s way, even though it is a song inspired by a friend’s troubles, it is one of optimism and hope, and also a reminder that sometimes all that is needed is a show of support and letting someone know that you are there for them.
Nick has found a musical place equidistant between the punks’ more raucous urges and roots music’s defter constructions, and although there are many others found mining a similar sonic seam, few have returned to the surface with musical gems as rich and rewarding as he does.
