“Could this be your new alt-rock obsession?” asks Scarlet Joy. On the strength of her new single, “Never Let Me Go,” I would have to answer, “quite possibly.”
After all, it’s a song that has its sonic cake and is happily eating the lot. If pop music is all about immediate acessibility, infectiousness and an instantly contagious quality, and rock music revels in scuzzy, raw guitars, attitude and a hint of cocky (though justifyable) swagger, then somehow, Scarlet Joy has managed to bring all that together in the deftest attraction of opposites since Romeo looked over at Juliet and said, “get thy cloak, thou hast pulled, babe.” (I’m paraphrasing; my Shakespeare is a bit rusty.)
Okay, that didn’t end so well, but I predict that Scarlet Joy’s story certainly will. How could it not, with songs like this, songs that tick boxes for pop-pickers and rock aficionados, chart followers and discerning music fans alike.
And ironically, the song could be about those star-crossed lovers —a celebration of passionate connection and two hearts beating as one, twin voices making a pact never to let the other go…the clue is in the title.
It’s fair to say that with this song, and indeed, this artist, we have something special on our hands!
