Scarlet Mill - She Waits (Indigo Mice)

27 August 2025

“She Waits” is a song that reminds us that most of the music made under the glam tag was actually more akin to this sound, the sort of exciting and ingenious sound that Bowie or Roxy Music would have been responsible for. And the reason why bands like Scarlet Mill are still making music in this vein is that, unlike the wave of stompy throwaway glitter glam pop made by, what looked like construction workers dressed in their wives’ clothes, (yes, The Sweet, I’m looking at you) this nods to the timeless, genreless, androgenous and gorgeous music that came from the more sophisticated quarters of that scene.

At the heart of “She Waits” is a story of recollection and revelation. As our protagonist lingers in the corner of a nightclub, his memories slowly return to him, perhaps triggered by the evocative music that floats about him —a heady blend of analogue synths and wah-wah-driven guitars, steady, seductive beats, and sassy saxophone. It’s as much about place as it is about feeling —a soundtrack to the moment when the past collides with the present, a déjà vu dance track, a rock and roll remembrance.

How can a song sound simultaneously nostalgic yet perfectly of the present? Like we have heard it before, yet exploding with fresh ideas? Like a classic that we are hearing for the first time? If we knew the answer to such conundrums, we would all be writing songs this memorable, this moving, this masterful.
