Well, that’s quite a provocative title for a track. I mean, I find it hilarious, but I know some out there will seek to find offence in it, and I guess that is the point. Depending on where you stand on such a title, it means that you immediately know if the band is for you or not. I’m all in!
But if, like me, your previous taste of the band has been through something big, raucous, and in-your-face, such as “Cardboard Hand Me Downs,” this new one will come as a real change of pace. At least to begin with.
It’s what we call a sonic slow burner, and “Some Of You …” (abbreviated to save space) starts in a more ambient, drifting place, all spacious beats, hazy sonic washes, and shards of delicate guitar. It is dark and delicious and deft and delicate. And slowly, the song cocoons itself in searing yet cinematic guitars and additional sonic layers, until about three-quarters of the way through when it puts its foot on the gas and turns into a squalling, seething musical mass, big, bombastic, brilliant.
And the great thing is that it takes time to run from that minimal opening salvo to its massive final act, a thirteen-minute musical journey, a song cycle in its own right, a smart, adventurous blend of prog and post-rock intense and brooding, muscular metal.
Yes, some people are always looking to be offended. These are the people whose lives remain bereft of such wonderful gems and brilliant experiences; they are the people who will always lose out in life, afraid to drink in its fun, its challenges and fresh, forward-thinking creativity. But that isn’t us, is it?
