A pop ballad with a soft but impactful rock and roll punch? A cinematic song rising from piano-led minimalism to wide-screen anthemics? A mindful musing on that moment when you realize that a relationship is finally over? Don’t mind if I do!
Sean Kennedy is back, and he’s back with a fantastic slice of pop-rock. We’ve all been there, well, those of us who have been around the block a time or two. That moment when, having navigated that emotional minefield that you have to tread carefully through as a relationship slips into less certain territory, you have to accept that it is over. That moment when you watch a face in the rear-view mirror, metaphorically or otherwise, getting increasingly smaller. However, and this is the tricky part, you still know you love them.
It’s an accessible and nostalgia-laced song, but one that approaches post-relationship feelings in a mature and measured way, something not quite in keeping with most of today’s chart-bound, pop competition.
And, just as the music is far more sophisticated than your average pop piece, so too are the lyrics. This is pop music for people who want more—discerning music for those who are tired of the same-old, same-old pop by numbers.
Pop music for grown-ups? Absolutely!
