Sean MacLeod’s music can best be described as that perfect blend of adventurous and genre-hopping without talking things out of the realms of accessible. Too many music makers think that to stand out, you have to twist genres and forge new fusion sounds in an effort to be different. The results might be (occasionally) revolutionary, but they are rarely palatable. Sean understands that you don’t have to head off into such realms, but that it is enough to be interesting, deft, infectious…good. Actually, very good.
His latest single, “Beautiful Star,” is the perfect example of that: slightly 60’s tinged with an echo of the late-era Beatle-esque, hints of late eighties pop, touches of psychedelia, and, for all that, perfectly in step with the modern age.
You can, as I have just done, strip away sounds and styles and examine what is going on, finding recognisable strands and known influences, but the one thing you can’t do is put a tag on the song or put Sean in a genre or pigeonhole. The perfect balance of the recognisable and the forward thinking, the fresh and the familiar.
And that is what keeps him ahead of the game. It pays to know where your music comes from, because only then can you truly understand where you are headed. And in Sean MacLeod’s case, I would say that is into a brilliantly creative future.
