If there is one thing that defines this second single garnered from Shaky’s second album, it is that he brilliantly hits that sweet spot equidistant between raw sonics and pop contagion. “Take It Away” is a song made where the pop’s infectiousness washes up on rock and roll’s sonic shores, where the melody of the former is hot-wired into the muscle of the latter, where choppy groove meets uncompromising grit. The best of both worlds? Absolutely!
And if it feels reminiscent of better times, earlier sounds and styles, a golden age where pop and rock mixed freely, hopped its own demarcations and cross-pollinated with abandon, that is only because everything is cyclical, everything comes around again, rather than a deliberate desire to live in the past. This is the sound of forward-thinking adventure rather than comfort-zoning!
“Take It Away” is an anthem to resilience, a fist-in-the-air slice of rabble-rousing that advocates being yourself, no matter how much life, work, or the system seems hellbent on changing you. You do you, and you do it better than anyone else, so just keep doing it.
In a nod to the way things used to be done, it also comes with a sonic travelling companion, a B-side for those old enough to remember such things. And “Sugar” is built on a fuller, wider-screen sound, a nice contrast to the staccato nature of its flipside.
Kinda Wild II, his second album (I bet you can guess what the first one is called), will be along soon, and you already have two reasons to buy it!
