SHARKEOLOGIST - Pony (Twenty Minute Records)

21 May 2026

Generally speaking, when bands choose to cover a song, it is often not that far removed from their own sonic world. They might rock up a pop song, strip an indie classic to its barest, dreamlike essence, or rework an old jazz standard into something more relevant to the modern age.

Few would push things along the sonic spectrum as far as SHARKEOLOGIST has done here, taking Genuwine’s 1999 trip-trap-hip-hop-r&b hit and entombing it in glacial-paced, sludgy, doom-grooves, making it now less a song to dance to, more the soundtrack to existence collapsing in on itself. You don’t get that from a single every day. Perhaps just as well…after all, its uniqueness and mind-bending originality are what make this so special.

It’s not really metal, especially once they break out the flutes, but it is certainly as heavy as anything found in that realm. Heavier even! It isn’t pop, but when they drop the guitars, it becomes an unexpectedly surreal, psychedelic pop ballad. For a while, anyway. And, as it evolves from dystopian soundtrack to blissed out anthemics, you realize that the more you play the track, the less certain about it you become. It doesn’t just wrong-foot the listener; it makes them question everything they think they know about music! Blimey!

When my world fell apart, and I realized I was no longer sure about anything, I never for a moment imagined that it would be because of an outrageous and audacious slice of rhythm & doom!
