How the wonderfully named Sharkeologist manage to mine so many sonic seems…or even scenes, weave together so many threads and still come out with something that doesn’t sound like a sonic Chimera, an ungodly mess, a song that is less than the sum of its parts, is testament to their songwriting chops, not to mention their ability as arrangers and players, composers and visonaries.
“There Will Be Bread” has it all, wandering from funky grooves to indie moves, New Orleans marching band brass to alt-pop invention, from the same surreal theatrics that served The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band so well to a wash of subliminal Zeppelin-esque anthemics. If there is anything that they have left out, it probably didn’t need to be there in the first place. It’s a veritable avant-gardening centre!
Examining how much those we feel we rely on in life actually feel the same way about us, of how transactional or money-oriented (hence the use of the word bread in the title) those around us really are, the song is unlike anything you have heard in a long time – madly melodic and melodically mad!
If someone told you this was the full version of the hippest, hottest new sitcom themetune to hit the airwaves, probably set in the Pacific Northwest’s funkiest coffee shop, I doubt too many people would challenge you on it.
