Sitting between the gentle complexities of shoegazery and the drifting soundscapes of dream pop, indie guitars, and ethereal pop harmonies, “Sweet Pea,” the new one from Silent Income is a gorgeous piece of music.
Perhaps the use of the word shoegaze is a bit of an overreach, conjuring images of cascades of clashing and cavernous guitars and dense walls of sound, but this is not that. It may have a foot in that camp, just, but it is its proximity to lighter, more accessible dream pop territory and indie finesse that tempers such excesses.
Echoing past dreamscape bands as well as understated indie sounds whilst continuing that sonic thread through the current music scene and offering a bright future for such delicate and delicious sounds, it is a lesson in understatement and restraint.
And even as it moves into more layered textures during its more elaborate middle section, it eschews the cliche of a solo or any of the usual conventions and structures, instead opting to merely become more…more intriguing, more tightly woven, more elaborate, and elegant, more…well, just more.
It’s a great experience, a gentle experience that seems to exist somewhere in the sacred space between indie icons such as The Sundays and the more drifting sound of Warpaint…and that is a great place to find yourself.
