Simon Adams - S/T EP (Self-Released)

4 April 2014

Simon Adams is a singer/songwriter from South Korea. Originally from England, he has relocated and has just released his debut self-titled EP. His own influences are of top-of-the-poppers like U2 and Coldplay, and it certainly shines through but Adams has mixed them all up into a softer, less annoyingly egotistical version of these artists.

Sounding more like Chris Martin vocally than Paul McCartney, the EP opener “A Beautiful Way” is nevertheless clearly reminiscent of some Macca’s great sappy piano tunes. Anyone a fan of the ballads from Let it Be will certainly find a home and something familiar in this song. The next song, “Our Man”, is a ridiculously catchy little pop song. Its ambitions are grand, but with a hook that great it doesn’t need to be.

“Our Man” speaks for much of Simon Adams’ own style. His influences are certainly of large arena pop, bombastic and saccharine, but his own reproductions are scaled-back and quainter, yet no less appealing.

The other two songs are just as crafty, leaving a feeling similar to Peter Frampton’s homespun pre-superstar albums; light on production, big on melody. It’s a pop-perfect EP, wonderful in every way, and its only problem is that its only four songs long. The EP is available from the artist, and was released March 21st.
