As last year’s Colorful White Lies album demonstrated admirably, Electric High are experts at making music in the timeless traditions of the classic rock sound. That’s not to say they aren’t adept at moving that sound on, all good bands can do that, but it is fair to say that the sonic elements and musical approach that makes classic rock the force to be reckoned with it is, were bolted down and clearly defined years ago, so to a degree, a lot of the work has already been done for them.
This, then, frees the band up to fully explore the classic rock space, taking those various established elements and making them really earn their money. To this end, “Siren’s Lullaby” is classic rock squared. The riffs groove harder, the beats drive more emphatically, the guitars gnash more rhythmically, and the vocals are more emploring. Everything you would expect from a classic rock song, only more. Much more. Like I say, classic rock squared.
They balance the spaciousness of the staccato riff with the intensity and claustrophobia of garage rock, the raw angularity of alt-rock with the relentless groove of the classic realm. Whilst they are doing all of this, the lyrics tell of those moments of distractions that can cause everything to come tumbling down around you, the titular siren’s call that draws you helpless from your planned path.
This is classic rock for the current age, totally familiar yet wonderfully forward-thinking.
