As the opener and lead single from Sky Is Alright’s first album in five years, FINITE, ‘Summer In Galt’ is a great reminder of what we have been missing while they have been away from the sonic fray. And what they return with is an album full of life, loss, and friendship in all its vulnerable, authentic, and honest glory, woven both through its actual songs and into the fabric of the lives of those who created it.
Although this album was written by Rishi Neal Arora to express his feelings and thoughts following the tragic loss of his sister, this first of three singles ahead of its release is as much about hope and optimism for the future as it is about loss and grief. And that ability to juggle such a complex emotional-cognitive dissonance is what makes the single so great: the ability to turn pain into ecstatic sonic beauty.
Blending the weight of shoegaze textures with more melodic flows, making the ornate and sophisticated sound so accessible, turning personal darkness into a sonic light, and opting not for a melancholic state but for something more reflective are just a few of the many reasons why this is such a great comeback.
And beyond the deeper reasons for the song’s existence, ‘Summer in Galt’ does what all great lead singles do: it makes you want to know more, hear more, experience more… it makes you want to buy the album.
There isn’t a level on which this great song doesn’t succeed perfectly.
