Music made for “those allergic to cliche?” I like it. But the problem with making such a bold statement is you have to back it up with the goods, put your musical money where your mouth is, so to speak. Thankfully, there is a lot going on in “Pulling Away From Our Friends” that is unique; there is more that is fresh than familiar. It looks like there is justification for such a claim.
So, the opposite of cliche is perhaps pioneering, novel, and new, but of course, you can’t reinvent everything at once; that simply wouldn’t work. But what Skybar Tiger does so well here is take a folk-infused indie sound and reshape it, but gently enough that it still has mass appeal.
What also has appeal is the nature of the lyrics; using poetic and sometimes challenging language, Alex Parker, the man behind the project, discusses the aftermath of the Covid lockdowns. Specifically, the song suggests quite convincingly, that while we think that we all emerged from that isolation and easily slipped back into our pre-Covid lives, that is certainly not the case for many; now we are perhaps more closed off and maybe more opinionated with it. Not a great combination.
“Pulling Away From Our Friends” is the sound of singer-songwriter observation and musical precision driven by a fuller, indie band sound via the folk-punk road poet. And of course it’s great.
This is my first encounter with Skybar Tiger’s music. I assure you it won’t be my last.
