With perfect timing, given that Halloween is just around the corner —a time when ancient spirits are said to spend the night in the mortal realm —*Sleepnowqueen* gives us the perfect music for the moment. “Ghost Party” is an obvious soundtrack for the evening, adding a fun spin to the spooky vibes, whether you believe in the deeper beliefs of this ancient celebration or just want to dress up and run through the streets in search of treats —and, if not, tricks!
But look deeper into the music, and you’ll find hidden depths. Below the humor and puns that run through the vocals, you find some great music. With jangling, shimmering indie guitar lines that The Church would have been proud of and basslines straight out of Simon Gallup of The Cure’s repertoire, there is a lovely hint of nostalgia found running through the song.
But never at the expense of accessibility, this is no wallowing in past glories, more an ’80s alternative torch being carried forward into the present day.
A song that is both lyrically fun and musically serious, nodding to the sounds of the past yet running full tilt into a modern, musical future, indie-infused yet pop-aware. Seasonal music has never really produced many memorable songs, but if you must go thst route, this is precisely how you do it!
