I had the same problem when writing about “Half the Glass,” and I am yet again faced with it when putting pen to paper for Slim Loris’s new single. Where do you place them on the musical map? Well, I guess that it isn’t a bad problem to have; all the best bands are slippery sonic eels when it comes to pinning a tag on them, and chasing such bands across the sonic landscape is part of the joy, it shows that they aren’t prepared to be contained, follow the rules or even live up to expectations. It’s all about the thrill of the chase, I guess.
It is not that “Washed Down Hard Times” is particularly “out there,” not in the way that the 60’s hippies meant when they coined the phrase. It is, after all, forged of very familiar elements – indie grooves and rock beats, pop accessibility, and a sort of glam-infused anthemic sheen. It’s just that what genre you consider it to be depends on what catches your ear first, such are the complexities and cool creative collisions at work here.
Anyway, enough about genres—that is just the currency of lazy journalists (like myself). What we have here is a song with so much of the good stuff woven through its DNA that it is sure to appeal to a broad range of music aficionados.
Rockers will dig the drive and energy, glamsters the bravado, indie-kids will like the groove, pop pickers the joyous accessibility. And, of course, those who have ever drunk to forget will relate to the lyrics. Man, we’ve all been there; believe me, I speak from experience. (Although, in my case, a nice fruity red is my go-to.)
