There are many reasons to love Sloan Treacy’s music. As you make your way through her second EP, was any of it real? you can’t help but be bowled over by the quality of the songs found here, especially when you realize that she is only sixteen; age should not be a factor in the quality of music. But it does make you think: if she can produce music like this at such a young age, what will she be doing this time next year, in five years, ten years, or twenty years?
Even before I have ventured beyond the first track, “The Good Part,” her lyrics impress. Sure, these are songs about the lives and loves and longings of a young person, but there is something wonderfully mature about the sentiment, not to mention eloquent about the delivery and turns of phrase employed, a long way from the cliché and clumsy penmanship of most pop music, irrespective of age!
The fact that there is an echo of Suzanne Vega, particularly that often anthemic blend of pop and folk of the first album, about “Pavement” seals the deal, a chiming, lilting blend of contemporary pop, but the sort of pop that doesn’t seem to be made any more, something sophisticated and serene, soulful and seductive.
“Mirage” sees her questioning what is real, but what is in no doubt is that aforementioned seductive quality is powered, in no small way, by her voice, one that, as required, is powerful and poised, melodic and mellifluous, folk-finessed, infectiously indie, and pop-perfect. “Optimist” proves that she can rock things up and by the time that “The Edge” floats by to end the EP, you realise that you have just stumbled across a quite amazing new artist.
And, as I said at the start, if this is her at sixteen, well…
