North West UK indie-rockers Snowdrop might have come more recently to the sonic fray, but “Morning Thoughts” sounds like a band that is anything but wet behind the years, to use an archaic turn of phrase.
Don’t get me wrong, the spirit and hunger, the energy and urgency of their younger years comes firing through the song, but there is also a deftness and robustness to their songwriting that belies their relatively short time in the game. They have obviously learned well and learned quickly. And the fact that they have road tested this song on the live circuit before committing it to the studio, shows. Shows and pays dividends.
“Morning Thoughts” marks the band as already masters of their craft —and that craft is the making of the sort of deft indie music that seems to have slipped out of fashion in recent years. It runs on rock’s raw energy, indie’s effortless cool, and power-pop’s instant accessibility. It’s a reminder that indie, and indeed pop, music once thrived on such antastic riffs and meaningful narratives, rather than moody muttering over off-the-shelf studio samples that seems to pass muster today.
And the fact that this blinding track sounds both fresh and fired up, yet familiar to the point of being on par with many of those classic tracks in the indie section of your old vinyl collection, shows how great they are at getting the balance just right.
As opening gambits, calling cards, and sonic mission statements go, they have made a lasting impression, no question.
