Soft Science - Spinning (Shelflife Records / Spinout Nuggets)

15 July 2026

Soft Science’s “Spinning” arrives as the first single from Sand, the Sacramento band’s fifth album, due September 4 via Shelflife Records in North America and Spinout Nuggets in the UK. The track sits naturally in the band’s dream pop and shoegaze world, with Katie Haley’s soft vocal line cutting through layered guitars, bass, drums, and synth textures. Soft Science stay within a familiar lane here, but they give the song enough motion and melodic shine to make that familiarity feel immediate.

The song has a clean forward drive, the kind that feels made for moving through warm air at night with the windows down. The guitars carry a bright, pop-rock bite that gives the track more lift than haze, while the rhythm keeps it from drifting into softness. There is a touch of late 90s and early 2000s melodic edge in the guitar feel, but Soft Science fold it into something smoother and more dreamlike. The result feels catchy without becoming sugary, polished without losing movement.

That movement fits the song’s emotional loop. “You got me spinning round, am I getting through now” is direct, but the band make the frustration physical instead of simply lyrical. The repeated motion in the guitars and rhythm gives the track the feeling of circling the same conversation again, still hoping something finally lands. Matt Levine’s guitar work adds a restless charge, while the chorus harmonies open the song just enough to turn that irritation into release. The tension never weighs the song down, but it keeps the brightness from floating away.

“Spinning” is strongest when it lets its pleasure stay uncomplicated. The song is lush, catchy, and easy to move with, but there is enough emotional friction in the writing to keep it from feeling weightless. Soft Science make the track feel like a bright rush through repetition, where the melody keeps circling because the feeling has not resolved yet. As an opening look at Sand, it gives the album a clean, inviting start: polished dream pop with heat in the guitars, motion in the rhythm, and a chorus that knows exactly how quickly it can get stuck in your head.

“Spinning” is out now. Sand arrives September 4 via Shelflife Records and Spinout Nuggets.
