If my first encounter with Sons of Martha was the up-and-at-‘em indie sound of “Midnight Deep End,” a song that echoed with some excellent musical references, not least The Go-Betweens (hurrah!), the new one comes from a very different place.
“A Nightjar Calls” runs on a more introspective and understated vibe and feels more whistful and nostalgic; it is wonderfully reflective musing on the idea of being content with what life gives you, learning to live with the passing of time, and making the most of the moment. A song that is clearly the product of an older (and more thoughtful) group of music makers and something that will resonate with those of us who have been around the block a time or two.
It is a subtle and seductive piece; one built on layers of gentle creativity, which, taken together, create a musical design of myriad colors rather than relying on merely sucker-punching the audience with one sonic idea. Piano’s tumble, beats are spacious and perfectly underplayed, bass lines are restrained, and guitars add depth and warmth rather than try to steal the limelight (take note, younger bands).
On top of all of that, Josh Beach wise and wonderful and worldly words are sagacious yet subtle advice from those with a bit more life experience, a reminder not to squander the precious time you have, to not wish your life away.
It’s a gorgeous piece of music, and, taken together with the more upbeat and groovesome vibe of the previous single, it shows us just what a fantastic sonic range this band has. Where they go next is anyone’s guess, but wherever it is, I’ll be following.
